Jiri Georg Dokoupil

Jiří Georg Dokoupil is one of the founders of the German Wild Youth Collective. When he first started to gain recognition in the art world in the beginning of the 1980s, he was identified by his non-traditional working methods. Dokoupil’s varied working methods from exhibition to exhibition, a consequence of his neo-expressionist and avant-garde approach, culminated in the Soap Bubble Series where chemistry and art converge. In this series, shiny bubbles that the artist has formed by combining soap solvent and pigments burst on the canvas to leave abstract marks. While in the beginning the artist appears to paint the bubbles, in reality, the artist is not painting the bubbles but creating them.

Jiří Georg Dokoupil (b.1954, Krnov) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Cologne in 1976 and attended classes at the University of Frankfurt and the Cooper Union, New York. His works are included in the collections of Neue Galerie, Berlin; Staatsgalerie Stuttgart; The National Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul; Kunstmuseum Horsens, Denmark; The Rubell Family Collection, Miami, FL; Société General Collection, Paris; Migros Museum, Zurich; and Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris.
