London-born and of Cypriot descent, Mustafa Hulusi creates paintings, installations, films, and photographs inspired by his multicultural identity. He combines references from both Middle Eastern and Western art history, exploring how various visual languages shaped by popular culture and mass media influence our perception. His works investigate the synthesis of traditional abstraction and representation in Islamic art; the artist also incorporates the flora and fauna of Cyprus, shaped by its Eastern Mediterranean heritage. His art contains traces of both Op Art and 1970s photorealism and merges themes of abstraction and figuration.
