Çiğdem Aky’s practice is characterised by the process of different paint applications on canvas and the reactions of colours to this application. Fundamentally anchored in three core elements – depth, structure, and tone –, her paintings create expansive colour fields on the canvas as she meticulously focuses on the application, structural integrity, and formation of colours. Aky’s works are distinguished by the use of bold brushstrokes to encapsulate intense contrasts within a defined frame, and she employs gestural brushstrokes or various geometric column combinations to delineate her motifs. Exploring the possibilities of abstraction in her practice, the artist strips the painting of expression by focusing on the interaction between the colour fields on the canvas, anchors the object to the form, and hence explores the boundaries, conditions, and possibilities of painting and colour. Perceiving her surroundings through colours, Çiğdem Aky intuitively projects impressions of landscapes and specific times of day, conveying her observations through her distinctive use of colours and form.
