Known for his large-scale sculptures comprising hybrid human, animal, and technological forms, Yogyakarta-based artist Ichwan Noor, in his practice, modifies different vehicular components into new shapes, challenging their original function. Especially famous for his sculptures made by reinterpreting parts of 1953 model VW Beetles and viewing the Beetle as one of the most successful designs that people will always be familiar with, Noor pushes the iconic skeleton of the vehicle to extremes while giving a new dimension to the car’s charged political history and signature design. He predominantly works with bronze, stainless steel, aluminium, various used materials, and resin. In his recent works, he utilises cast and welded transformed found materials.
