Fahrelnissa Zeid’s artistic practice constructs a visual universe in constant dialogue between figuration and abstraction, bringing together the diverse aesthetic traditions of East and West through a singular painterly language. Drawing on European modernism, Byzantine mosaics, the rhythmic structures of Islamic art and the spatial sensibility of miniature painting, Zeid began her career working in an expressive figurative style before developing a distinctive approach to abstraction grounded in a profound spiritual understanding of painting. In her large-scale compositions, she transforms colour, light and movement into a cosmic energy, exploring both the material and spiritual possibilities of the medium while forging connections between the inner self and the universal through kaleidoscopic structures and vibrant chromatic rhythms. Spanning early figurative paintings, monumental geometric and lyrical abstractions, psychologically charged portraits and experimental sculptural works incorporating materials such as animal bones and resin, her practice defies any single movement or category, establishing a distinctive artistic language. Thick impasto, pronounced palette-knife marks, calligraphic references and rhythmic geometric networks create a powerful sense of vibration and movement, while recurring motifs – including the sky, the sea, cosmic landscapes and the human face – transform the artist’s inner world into a universal visual experience. For Zeid, painting is not merely a means of representing the visible world, but a creative vehicle through which inner reality, intuition and humanity’s spiritual relationship with the universe could be made visible.
