Tomokazu Matsuyama at SCAD Museum of Art

SCAD Museum of Art presents Liberation Back Home, a solo exhibition by Tomokazu Matsuyama, on view from 1 August 2025 to 4 January 2026. Featuring large-scale paintings and sculptures, the exhibition blurs the boundaries between interior and exterior, East and West, past and present. In his work, the artist centres on themes of cultural identity and displacement, drawing on a wide range of visual references, including traditional Nihonga painting and contemporary Japanese aesthetics, as well as American editorial photography and the graphic language of West Coast subcultures. The exhibition also includes works from First Last, a series inspired by religious imagery and Western art historical representations of biblical scenes. Curated by Brittany Richmond and Ben Tollefson, Liberation Back Home explores how narratives and their accompanying images have evolved across centuries and how individual identity and societal perception have shifted in relation to context.
