Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu at Salt Galata

Dark World, the exhibition named after and centred on the 1953 film of the same title, is now on view at Salt Galata. Written by Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu and directed by Metin Erksan, the film was initially conceived as a social realist portrayal of the life of Âşık Veysel (1894–1973), a seminal figure in the Anatolian minstrel tradition. However, under state intervention, it was later re-edited to reflect narratives of rural development and modernisation, ultimately becoming a tool for propaganda. Curated by Gülce Özkara, the exhibition does not attempt to reconstruct the film, but instead traces its layered transformation through surviving fragments of film and sound. Offering a critical lens on censorship, memory, and state influence in post–World War II Turkey, Dark World is on view until 14 December 2025.
