Sarkis at Maxim Gorki Theatre

Maxim Gorki Theatre in Berlin opens its 2026/2027 season on 4 September with a site-specific installation by Sarkis. Developed in collaboration with the Kantor Museum, the project transforms the theatre’s stage and auditorium into a major installation that enters into dialogue with the universe of the Polish painter, theatre director, set designer and writer Tadeusz Kantor. Inviting Kantor — whose practice dissolved the boundaries between theatre, objects, images, memory and trauma — into his own artistic language, Sarkis creates an experience in which historical, political and aesthetic realms converge. Rooted in the artist’s longstanding notion of the ‘invitation’, the project also marks the foundation of Maxim Gorki Theatre’s new interdisciplinary vision under the artistic direction of Çağla Ilk, bringing together the stage and the exhibition as interconnected spaces of encounter.
