Bernard Frize

This catalogue was published for the exhibition titled Togetherless by Bernard Frize held at Dirimart Dolapdere on 20 March–29 April 2018. The catalogue presenting Frize’s ten works painted exclusively for this exhibition features a text by Jurriaan Benschop. In 2019, the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris hosted a retrospective of Bernard Frize, one of the foremost abstract painters in the world.

The exhibition and the accompanying catalogue features ten paintings made by using seven colours: red, yellow, brown, pink, green, and two types of blue. Ten paintings sharing the same colours, some even sharing the same motif. A group of paintings in this exhibition were made with a wide brush on which he put the seven colours next to each other. The artist then moved the brush around, creating patterns reminiscent of a kaleidoscope. Another group bore a woven compositional pattern created by crossing four vertical and three horizontal bands of colour. What connects the paintings is rather a compositional scheme. As for colour, those ten paintings produce very different results in terms of atmosphere, brightness, and accessibility.
