Frieze Sculpture 2026
At the 2026 edition of Frieze Sculpture, curated by Fatoş Üstek, Dirimart will present Possibilities for a Sculpture (2026) by Frankfurt-based artist duo Özlem Günyol & Mustafa Kunt. Installed across multiple sites in The Regent’s Park, Possibilities for a Sculpture reimagines the conventions of public sculpture, inviting visitors to become the absent figures of three London monuments through their own bodies.
Drawing on three monuments that occupy significant sites within London’s urban landscape, Günyol & Kunt replace the original sculpted figures with written instructions describing their poses. The instructions are inscribed onto concrete surfaces embedded in the ground, each corresponding in scale to the pedestal of their specific monument. Those who step onto the surfaces and engage with the text, become provisional sculptures, activating and transforming the work with each encounter.
By bringing the elevated surfaces of monumental plinths to ground level, Possibilities for a Sculpture disrupts the relationship between sculpture, viewer, and site. Rather than presenting the monument as a fixed and authoritative object, the work proposes sculpture as a living and contingent form shaped by language, exchange, and interpretation. In the setting of The Regent’s Park, the absent monumental figures are brought into being through the bodies and imaginations of visitors, creating a work that changes with every encounter.
Günyol & Kunt’s collaborative practice explores the construction of individual and collective identity through the interplay of language, symbols, media-generated information, and culturally embedded systems of understanding. Working across installation, sculpture, text, and performance, the duo examines how meaning is produced and negotiated, inviting viewers to reconsider the visual and linguistic structures that shape perception.
Possibilities for a Sculpture will be on view as part of Frieze Sculpture from 16 September until 1 November 2026 at The Regent’s Park, London.
