Albert Bitran (b. 1931, Istanbul; d. 2018, Paris) went to Paris at the age of 17 to study architecture but built his identity as an artist, opening his first exhibition in 1951 in Paris. Starting his artistic career at a young age, his works were included in important post-war Paris art scene exhibitions such as Salon des Réalités Nouvelles and Salon de Mai. Besides Paris, he held exhibitions in various art centers around the world including Milan, Cologne, Brussels, Cuba, Stockholm, New York, London, Copenhagen, Tokyo, Istanbul, and Lyon, and adopted an abstract form of expression rather than a figurative narrative. Recent solo exhibitions include Land of Shadows, Land of Skies, Dirimart Dolapdere, Istanbul (2024); Exposition Albert Bitran, Galerie Bertrand Trocmez, Clermont-Ferrand (2019); Affinities in Major Black, Galerie Convergences & Galerie Gratadou-Intuiti, Paris (2017); and Regard sur Albert Bitran, Elfebeen Mansion, Luxembourg (2016). His recent group exhibitions include Floating Islands, Istanbul Modern, Istanbul (2023) and Two Painters, Two Sculptors, Galerie Martel Greiner, Paris (2020). His works are included in numerous art institutions as well as private collections around the world, including Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen; Istanbul Painting and Sculpture Museum, Istanbul; Istanbul Modern, Istanbul; Musée des beaux-arts, Lyon; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Cuba State Collection, Cuba; and National Art Gallery New Zealand, Wellington.
