Peter Zimmermann is known for his works that question the artist’s role in an era deeply shaken by the prevalence of digital-based representation processes in visual perception. His works examine the relationships between the original and the copy, reality and illusion, and craftsmanship and industrial production. Zimmermann’s creation process begins by gathering visuals, such as photographs, film stills, or diagrams that he has collected physically or by scanning. He then deconstructs these visuals using graphic algorithms to render them unrecognisable. Skilled in transferring these images onto canvas using epoxy in his compositions, he has also produced an oil painting series concurrently since 2014. ‘There is text behind the surface of every digital image,’ says Zimmerman, while transforming the visuals we are constantly exposed to in the age of visual communication, reinterpreting traditional painting in relation to Modernism and the Colour Field movement, as well as the concept of representation.
