Alisa Sibirskaya, Sibirskaya

Dirimart is pleased to host the first solo exhibition of Alisa Sibirskaya in Turkey. The exhibition brings together the artist’s photographs from 2017 to 2020.

Taking her photographs as a diary, Sibirskaya’s images bear the traces of her personal details. The artist doesn’t aim to convey something to the viewer; she produces works that encourage questioning rather than making a point, that ask questions rather than giving answers, invoke feelings rather than delivering messages. Conceiving photography as the art of finding and forming light, Sibirskaya fills the worlds of characters who are not attached to any historical moment, nor a specific place, with symbols and metaphors, to narrate stories that call upon a myriad of interpretations in the viewers. Alisa Sibirskaya was born in 1989 in Siberia, Krasnoyarsk in the former Soviet Union. She started her education at a professional music school in her city of birth. She studied violin, piano, vocal, music education, and composition for nine years. Taking a turn in her world at sixteen, she started studying theatre. She was graduated from dramatic arts at the Krasnoyarsk State Academy of Music and Theatre. She pursued her interests in theory and stage directorship, investigating the famous Russian psychological theatre together with a group of actors and students, focusing on modern and experimental theatre practices. In those years, seeds of another aspiration began to germinate in her, an aspiration which is still there in her life and art. Following her theatre education, she went on a journey through Europe, lived in Madrid for a year, a city where she had the opportunity to get closely acquainted with European art. In pursuit of this aspiration, she moved to Barcelona where she enrolled for a degree in photography at the Institute of Photographic Studies of Catalonia.

In this journey she discovered the world of plastic arts with inspirations from past centuries’ paintings, internalizing the sensitivity and precision of all those painters: ideas, techniques, perfection in forms, mastering light and shadow. All those roots blossomed in her art. She lives and works in Barcelona.
