Gabriela Těthalová, Hyperbole Rising
Since, through science, I inscribe
The hymn of hearts so spiritual
In my work of patience, inside
Atlas, herbal, ritual.
Stéphane Mallarmé, ‘Prose (for des Esseintes)’

Dirimart is pleased to announce Gabriela Těthalová’s first solo exhibition at the gallery, Hyperbole Rising. This is also the artist’s debut show in Istanbul, where she displays her most recent body of work, which emerged with the inspiration of French poet and critic Mallarmé’s ‘Prose (for des Esseintes)’.

Gabriela Těthalová’s artistic practice inaugurates with questioning painting by comparing music in written form. In search of the role of rhythm in music, literature, poetry, and visual arts, the artist seeks ways of creating abstract works based on aesthetic values that are hard to access consciously. The artist's compositions juxtapose originally constructed spatial algebraic structures with hints of floral and non-abstract forms in detail. This blend creates one-of-a-kind compositions that aim at the beauty of abstraction that are mostly perceived nonverbally. Yet the artist’s approach is not to bestow the mystification of the complex beauty of our times but to have a broader reading of the ideas related to abstraction in a cross-disciplinary and cross-generational way.

In the crossroads of construction of the ‘beautiful’ through spiritual and physical elements expressed through abstract, Těthalová investigates how to contribute to the contemporary aesthetic of today’s society that is being built on theory of information, internet networks and cryptography. In her works, the viewer might assume that mathematical mechanics that reflect their aesthetical aspects only through equations and formulas are translated into meticulously detailed visual compositions. Along with her paintings, the installations are also juxtaposed in the exhibition to reflect further on the network of relationships between material, painting, performance and language. The artist asks what happens if we understood painting as a specific type of recording, thus creating abstract universes of Space Webs, Multiplicity of Stems, Magic Spell Devices and Flower Anatomies that give the impression of common roots – the roots that keep us curious about the unknown and undiscovered but let us develop an intuitive understanding of them.

Gabriela Těthalová’s last body of works, Hyperbole Rising, will be on view at Dirimart Pera from 8 January to 16 February 2025.
