Dirimart proudly presents Eternal Resonance, an exhibition featuring Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu – a pioneering figure in Turkish art history renowned as a passionate artist, enthusiastic poet, and visionary teacher. Displayed across three distinct spaces at Dirimart Dolapdere and Pera, the exhibition emphasises the enduring nature of Eyüboğlu’s immortal energy woven into each piece.
As a masterful storyteller, Eyüboğlu’s works overflow with raw emotions while his spirit of experimentation spans various media and styles. Delving into universal themes rooted in the depth of the human experience, his works explore cultural symbolism, and the lives of ordinary people, forging a connection with art that still remain relevant today. In that context, it reminds us that contemporaneity transcends its temporal context, possessing the ability to communicate across generations and evoke universal emotions that stand the test of time.
The exhibition not only provides a panoramic perspective on the various facets of Eyüboğlu’s career – from his formative years to his harmonious blend of traditional motifs and modernist influences, culminating in his abstract and experimental phase – but also offers an unprecedented opportunity to delve into his large-scale works. Alongside his well-known masterpieces, the exhibition unveils previously unseen works, inviting the viewer into a captivating exploration of his diverse creations. Highlighting his role as an artistic alchemist transforming emotions and stories into masterpieces, it is an invitation to witness the world through his passionate eyes, to feel the pulse of creativity that continues to beat in the present day.
The first section, located at the 4th floor of Dirimart Pera’s building, chronicles his Academy education and the evolution of his style. Showcasing diverse works including charcoal drawings, self-portraits, portraits, nudes, and notable pieces like Elopement and his awardwinning graduation piece Turkish Bath.
The second section, located at Dirimart Pera on floor –1 (minus 1), showcases artworks from 1930s to 1970s. Starting with his work The Battleship Yavuz, which was the painting on his bedside table until his death in 1975, this section also includes Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu’s final masterpiece, Purple Inn. This section enables the viewer to witness the evolutionary phase of his art and the themes he revisits in distinct periods. The section also delves into 1950s where he merged traditional Turkish motifs with modernist influences and his abstract and experimental phase from the early 1960s, focusing on the enchantment of colour and texture through material experimentation. Much like timeless myths, these works transcend geographical boundaries, adopting new identities in diverse cultures. Rooted in societal connections, he infuses his art with the imagery of cultural codes, establishing a profound connection with the cultural mosaic of his homeland.
The third section of the exhibition, held at Dirimart Dolapdere, showcases Eyüboğlu’s works from 1950’s to 1970’s and offers a unique opportunity to witness Eyüboğlu’s mastery in crafting large-scale works that represent the pinnacle of his artistic expression. This dedicated space showcases his monumental pieces, including notable works such as The Swift, Child with Bird, Karagöz’s Ship, and Blue Voyage Fish. Additionally, it features works from the Babatomi and Kiss series, separated by a distinct section, providing a more comprehensive glimpse into the various facets of his career.
Eternal Resonance, extending a warm invitation to traverse the timeless corridors of Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu’s artistic journey, will be on view at Dirimart Dolapdere and Dirimart Pera until 21 January 2024.
