Dirimart proudly presents SILENT SYMPHONY, an exhibition by the artist duo Florian & Michael Quistrebert, focusing on experiencing light and reflection both in the gallery space and on the painting surface. With the exhibition, the duo challenges the boundaries of human perception, exploring physical matter and unstable surfaces.
SILENT SYMPHONY forms a dialogue between the brothers’ two latest works, namely Grand Orgue video installation and Silent Watchers paintings, as two different entities conversing beyond words. Playing on numerous visual effects that they combine with curious effects of material (impastos, swellings, projection, etc.), it enriches the experience of a kaleidoscopic effect in their practice.
The exhibition stems from and rotates around their video installation titled Grand Orgue (2021), positioned at the centre of the exhibition space, functioning as the ‘mother source’. A monument-like installation derives from the video piece of a colour symphony unfolded into three dimensions. This new form overwhelms the space with its luminescent presence and repetitive colourful waves, suggesting a mesmerising fountain, diffusing its inner chants out in all dimensions. The bodiless structure of the stele seems to haze out of a spectral space like a cosmic gate beyond consciousness. The surface changes according to the light to create an unstable surface. The dematerialisation of solid architecture allows the viewer to experiment with the physical matter and realise the power of reflection and irony.
Grand Orgue is accompanied by a series of portraits around the installation with their silent presence, like a group of mute faces staring at the surface of the installation with mixed emotions. The portraits are shaped with architectural features reminiscent of the brutalist style, as the colourful gradients bring a hazy shimmer. For the Quistrebert brothers, light is the central element of their painting. This contradiction between cold architectural lines and wavering colours suggests that emotional tension is locked in those portraits yet moved by the inner music of the stele. Working with different light sources and materials defining light, Quistreberts focus on performance on canvas and material to highlight motion and create something optically provoking.
SILENT SYMPHONY can be visited at Dirimart Dolapdere from 9 February to 10 March 2024.
