Dirimart is pleased to present Ruptured Adjacency, Jin Meyerson's first solo exhibition with the gallery. Bringing together the artist's new paintings and video work, the exhibition unfolds around themes of re-entry, displacement, memory, and generative connection. Working between figuration and abstraction, Meyerson combines digital and analogue modes of production to explore structures of awareness and the ways in which images are experienced. In his works, where data and paint converge within the same practice, images undergo transformation and acquire distinct visual signatures.
The exhibition title, Ruptured Adjacency, refers to the proximities formed between elements that have been separated, and how they remain connected despite distance. In Meyerson's paintings, images drawn from a personal archive of LIDR scans and preceding paintings and videos are linked through a generative process of shifting points of perception. The interplay between figurative elements and abstract forms gives rise to compositions that allow for multiple readings to coexist, rather than presenting a single, linear narrative.
Within Meyerson's practice, the concepts of memory and identity are closely intertwined with his personal history. Born in Korea and adopted by an American family, Meyerson grew up without official records of his birth. Drawing on this experience, the artist addresses exile, belonging, and the ways in which fragmented histories resonate within both individual and collective memory. In his work, the past emerges not as a fixed narrative, but as something that can be rewoven through processes of remembering, loss, and reconciliation.
An early pioneer of combining painterly and digital spaces since the late 1990s, Meyerson has incorporated randomisation software and continues to explore updated imaging software. The artist cites his entry into radical digital space as a direct result of growing up in diasporic communities at a moment when digital space was a frontier that belonged to no one and everyone. As digitally processed images meet paint and gesture on the canvas, a continuous interaction emerges between algorithmic systems and the artist's decisions, bringing unexpected outcomes generated by technology into dialogue with bodily interventions.
The video presented in the exhibition, drawn from the same data as the paintings, extending Meyerson's investigation of the image into the dimensions of movement and time. Shown in a dedicated darkened room, the video offers an experience distinct from that of the main exhibition space, while establishing a relationship with the paintings as both source and conclusion. The spatial configuration of the exhibition thus becomes integral to Meyerson's immersive approach to working across different scales and media.
Ruptured Adjacency brings together various strands of Meyerson's practice, from personal memory to digital image-making, while examining the relationships between past and present, personal and collective, and the analogue and the digital. The exhibition focuses on how images originating from disparate sources can generate new meanings and connections when brought together.
Explores the intersection of identity, memory, displacement, and fragmented histories, Ruptured Adjacency will be on view at Dirimart Dolapdere from 19 November to 13 December 2026.
